FAQs for Jungle Survival Courses in Guyana

We’ve welcomed a broad spectrum of individuals on our jungle survival courses, ranging from young professionals, students, and military personnel to participants from survival shows. We embrace everyone, regardless of gender or background, fostering an environment of inclusivity and diversity.

Most people on our trips are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, but we’ve had people much older than this enjoy our courses too. All you need is a good attitude and an adventurous spirit and you’ll fit right in.

Our courses aim to challenge you and push your boundaries. Hence, we advise a reasonable fitness level before you embark on your journey. You should be able to carry a rucksack weighing around 20 kilograms whilst navigating through the jungle. The course comprises long training days and an isolation phase that requires a fair amount of physical exertion.

But you certainly don’t need to be an Olympian! You need steady stamina, good all-around fitness, and a can-do attitude when facing challenges.

Our jungle tours can be completely tailor-made for our guests. We can take care of all physical work and ensure you can spend all your time with your camera, fishing line or whatever the purpose of the trip is. We are well seasoned in having a guest with reduced ability to walk in hills or long durations, and we can create trips that make it possible for most types of guests to visit even remote places of Guyana.

Our jungle expeditions can be entirely bespoke, catering to individual preferences and abilities. Whether you’re keen on capturing memories with your camera, enjoying some fishing, or have a distinct purpose for your trip, we can adjust the itinerary to suit you. We have ample experience accommodating guests who may find prolonged walking or hilly terrains challenging. Rest assured; we can craft a journey allowing virtually everyone to experience the unparalleled beauty of even the most secluded parts of Guyana.

The rainforest in Guyana has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. During the rainy season, the rivers swell, making remote areas more accessible, but it also comes with high humidity and heavy rains. In contrast, the dry season is characterised by less rainfall, fewer insects and less mud.

Regardless of the season, the average daytime temperature fluctuates between 29 and 33 degrees Celsius (85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit), with cooler temperatures at night.

We recommend getting at least 200 USD with you, as you won’t be able to use cards or withdraw money once we head into the interior.

The maximum number of people we allow on a single jungle survival course, expedition or jungle tour is 12. We believe in small, intimate group sizes that foster a supportive and fun learning environment where everyone gets the needed attention.

Our courses and tours are conducted in English. Our guides are all experienced and fluent English speakers. They’ll make sure to speak clearly and explain everything in a way you can understand. If you don’t speak English well, we recommend bringing a friend who can help you with translation.

We practically provide emergency evacuation if needed. This will logistically get you to the nearest medical facility if necessary. However, it does not cover the cost of treatment or the actual cost associated with a medical evacuation. This will all have to be covered by your personal travel insurance.

We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance that covers you for medical costs, trip cancellation, and any other losses that could occur. We also recommend that your insurance policy covers adventure activities, like the ones involved in our jungle survival course, expeditions or jungle tour trip descriptions.

Packing for the jungle is a unique challenge! We recommend that you pack as lightly as possible. You’ll need to carry everything you bring while hiking, and excess baggage can quickly become a burden.

We will provide you with a detailed packing list upon booking, but here are a few essential items you should bring:

  1. A good quality head torch with plenty of spare batteries or more modern rechargeable ones.
  2. Trekking boots and trainers.
  3. Lightweight, quick-drying clothing, including long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect against sunburn and insects.
  4. Personal medications and any other personal hygiene items you may need.
  5. A refillable water bottle.
  6. Sunscreen and insect repellent.
  7. A waterproof bag for keeping your items dry.
  8. A high-capacity power bank for charging your electronic devices.

Remember that we will provide you with a basic survival kit on arrival.

Yes, it’s recommended that you know how to swim. During the jungle survival courses and expeditions, you will likely encounter situations where you must cross rivers or swim. Therefore, basic swimming skills are important. However, you don’t need to be an excellent swimmer – just confident enough in the water.

Our guides are all trained in wilderness first aid and are equipped to handle a variety of injuries and illnesses that might occur in the jungle. They will treat you on the spot if it’s a minor issue. If it’s more serious, we will arrange your evacuation to the nearest medical facility.

We have an established emergency procedure that we follow in the event of an accident or illness. Your safety and health are our top priorities, and we will do everything possible to ensure you are cared for.

Guyana’s jungles are full of diverse wildlife. You’ll likely spot several species of monkeys, caimans, macaws, tapirs, and possibly even the elusive jaguar! However, the jungle is also home to many insects, spiders, and snakes. Your guide will help you identify these creatures and teach you how to behave around them to ensure your safety.

Our jungle survival course is about learning to survive with what the jungle provides, and sometimes, that includes insects. However, we understand that not everyone is comfortable with this, and we won’t force anyone to do anything they’re uncomfortable with. That being said, insects are a great source of protein and can be a valuable food source in a survival situation.

Our dedication to sustainability ensures we minimise our ecological footprint. We adhere to responsible waste disposal, promote sustainable harvesting of trees and plants, and utilise traditional methods and materials to lessen environmental strain. Moreover, limiting our group sizes further reduces our environmental and local wildlife impact.
