Serious treks into the middle of nowhere in true age-old explorer spirit. Walk off where few, if any, have been before, soak up the jungle life and push yourself to the limits.
Bushmasters offers both Standard and RAW treks. All of these treks explore new areas of pristine jungle and open new trails. We try never to take the same route twice.
In 2006 we are running a number of trips that venture into different areas; please refer to the table at the bottom of this page for details of locations and difficulty levels.
Standard Trek
This 16-day trip takes you to the remote, pristine jungles of Guyana, in South America. With a Bushmasters instructor and the vast knowledge of two senior, local Amerindian guides you will learn just how easy and how much fun it is to live in the jungle.
As soon as you arrive in country we start the acclimatization and jungle training package. We will give you all the essential jungle kit you need, and then fly you off in a light plane, hundreds of miles deep into the jungles of Guyana.
You will get the chance to put up and sleep in your own hammock, learn how to use a machete safely, bathe in jungle rivers and take in all the wildlife and strange sounds the forest has to offer. We also have to sort out the gear we need to take. We have to carry as light a pack as possible, but still have all the food, camp equipment and safety kit we need for the trek ahead.
Our trek phase can start in a variety of ways. We may head off in a 4x4 vehicle, dug out canoe, motor boat or indeed, just walk off into the mountains. Each trek heads off into a different location; we never use the same route twice. We have tried to rate each trek as to its difficulty level, but please bear in mind that we are traveling new routes and going to places where few people have been before, so this is only an estimation. All Bushmasters treks are challenging, but if we are planning on climbing jungle mountains everyday we will tell you!
At the end of this adventure we will throw you into the lap of luxury for a few days to wind down and relive stories from your adventure. We will whisk you off to a lodge where the pool is warm and relaxing and the beer, cold and plentiful. You will stay in beautiful en-suite rooms and eat some of the best food you have tasted, in at least two weeks! The next day we are off in another plane to see the world's tallest single drop waterfall, Kaieteur.
Following Kaieteur we fly off, back across the jungle with huge Tepui mountains in the distance. These are table top mountains, which just rise out of the jungle and were the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story of "The Lost World." We cut over the Essequibo river, the third biggest in South America and wider than the Channel from Dover to Calais at its mouth and land on a small island in the middle of the river. Here, accommodation is in a luxurious old colonial building, which has been turned into a resort where the likes of Mick Jagger have stayed. This will be the last night of the trek. There is time for some classic Caribbean fun in the afternoon, with wake boards, jet skis, banana boats all on tap, plus we will probably be the only people on the beach. Dinner is taken overlooking the beach and the bar stays open very late!
Our final day and after a thankfully late breakfast, we head off by jet boat down the Essequibo and then transfer into a minibus for the hour or so ride to the airport and your flight home, ending your action packed stay and trek in the Amazon.
Raw Trek
Are you up for a jungle trek, but can't afford it right now... then maybe a RAW package is for you.
For a few trips every year, we cut out all the fancy luxurious items in an effort to reduce costs to the bare minimum. Light aircraft charters in and out of the jungle, stays in posh lodges and trips to waterfalls are all very expensive. Distances traveled are large plus the lodges have to be self sufficient. There is no electricity or sewage system - they have to build it all and do it in an environmentally friendly way, which all costs money.
On a RAW trip we will drive you for nearly 14 hours in a 4x4 truck in and out of the forest. There are no posh lodges for you to stay in and we're afraid it will be an additional expense if want to visit Kaieteur Falls. But, you get exactly the same amount of time on trek, same staff and same fun.
A RAW trip means you get all this for just £950, over 35% cheaper than the standard Trek Course. Now there really are no excuses! Can you cope?
